But to get back on topic, the pokemon used by the subway trainers seem to have moves that may render your strategies useless.

IIRC, the subway is made to counter team you this generation. Since I like to run the same team both in-game, and competitively, it's tough for me to create a team of three Pokemon with good synergy, especially since I run a hyper offensive-oriented team I prefer using one of the slots for a dual-screener. I found it to be extremely difficult and this was with cheating I first used a Spiritomb with Wonderguard and it was going well until I lost badly.
I never met or heard of someone that beat the Battle Subway without cheating. Lord Varion. I beat for about 3 or 4 battles and then I stop because it is getting boring :P. Yeah, you really want to avoid anything with a x4 weakness unless you're specifically prepared for it. Wow, I must be an exception. Anville Town's residents are famous for giving away items; one will even give away items depending on how many sets of seven Battle Subway battles the player has defeated that day.
