It never feels confused or hesitates, like other eight- and nine-speed transmissions, and shifts gears smoothly. The net result of these two working together is an impressive fuel economy return of 5. As for the rest of the driving experience, it is typical 3-Series.
The ride is a bit harsh at times, even on the inch alloys, with a tendency to jar over bumps, but it settles quickly and there is good body control.
In the corners the i feels agile and dynamic; the steering is direct and responsive, making it a pleasure to drive. It certainly doesn't feel like you're missing out on any of the BMW driving experience by opting for the cheapest model in the range.
Which brings us to the most important question of the i - the price. That is a sharp price for a well presented luxury car. Yes, it lacks a bit of the polish and goodies you get on more expensive models but it gives you access to BMW's trademark design and dynamics at a far more affordable price.
