Brock has a weakness for pretty girls such as the Sensational Sisters , and he is the only character that can tell the many Nurse Joys and Officer Jennys apart. Brock used these Geodude during his challenge as a Gym Leader against Ash.
Brock, along with Ash and Misty , made cameo appearances in bonus chapters. He has the same team in the manga as he would in the actual movies. There had been some debate between members of the fanbase in regards to why Brock was removed from the main cast during the Orange Islands arc, why Tracey Sketchit was created, and why Brock returned later.
So they created a "tall, Anglo-Saxon looking person to be on the safe side". They later replaced Tracey with Brock again once they realized that no one really cared as to what Brock looks like, and actually enjoyed his character. However, this was only stated by Hidaka and not by any other staff member. Page actions Article Discussion View source History. Hidaka went on to reiterate that Pokemon 's global debut caused the team to consider cultural stereotypes even more closely. That is why Brock was ultimately taken out to make room for Tracey as the photographer looked like a typical Anglican male. However, this new trainer did not stick around, and Hidaka said Brock was returned after fans made their love of the character known.
You can see why Brock's exit confused fans back in the day, but Hidaka makes it clear the character himself wasn't at fault for disappearing. Instead, the choice was made out of an abundance of caution. Upon traveling home, he helps his younger brother become the new Pewter City Gym Leader. During this time, he encounters Cilan, who at the time was Ash's traveling companion. The two help each other out with a series of conflicts that require both of their deft touches, never realizing they had a mutual friend in Ash.
Ultimately, however, Brock advanced on his own. As a mentor to Ash, he helped him pursue his dreams. With Ash seemingly competent enough on his own, however, Brock evolved into the ideal version of himself on his own. Misty departed from the series far earlier than Brock and therefore had more time to develop on her own. Misty took over the Cerulean Gym after she learned her sisters, who had overseen the Gym, were going on tour.
She became an effective Gym Leader in her own right, overcoming her fear of Gyarados while receiving help from another former companion of Ash's: Tracey. Tracey had since become Professor Oak's assistant, which meant he was in the area quite frequently, running errands for Professor Oak.
Misty ended up appearing a couple of times in Hoenn.
