Today we are going to answer this question and shed some light on best practices when using hot melt glue with fabric. Fabric is an interesting substrate and presents some unique challenges. Because it is porous, many adhesives will work for bonding to it to some degree but it is often thin or heat sensitive which needs to be taken into consideration when choosing a hot glue.
Because of this sensitivity to heat, we strongly recommend using a low temp or multi-temp hot glue stick. This can help you to be able to scrape the hot glue off of carpet fibers. If there is still some glue left over, try step one or two on the remaining glue! That should do the trick. All you need is acetone or acetone nail polish remover and some cotton swabs or soft cloth. Goo gone is also a great adhesive remover so if you have some of that laying around this can be a fine substitute.
Acetone is a wonderful adhesive remover that can knock out hardened hot glue stains. If all looks good, soak the cloth or cotton ball with the acetone nail polish remover. Apply it to the hot glue stained area and let it soak. Take a clean cotton ball or cloth and blot the glue dry. The glue should loosen up and transfer onto the cotton ball or cloth. Dissolve the residue with rubbing alcohol, vodka, or vinegar. Soak part of a clean cloth or paper towel in rubbing alcohol.
Lay the wet cloth on top of the residue and let it sit for minutes to let the solvent soak into the glue. Scratch away the residue with your fingers or something plastic after you let it soak.
