Deadpool would later use his wish from surviving the battle to bring Zsaji back to her life and he sent her back to live on her home planet once more. The second generation of X-Men was intended to be a more inclusive version of the team in terms of nationalities.
The original X-Men were all white Americans, while the second generation was a mixed group, with the only American in the group being a Native American. It's not known if the inclusion of a Russian member of the X-Men was controversial when Colossus first debuted on the team, as the Cold War was still going on when Giant-Size X-Men 1 was first printed in It's possible that any Russians who read the issue might not have been so thrilled.
The one Russian member of the X-Men team was named after Rasputin, who was one of the most hated figures in the country's history. You may think that it's a coincidence that Colossus and his siblings have the same name as Rasputin. Maybe that it is just a common surname in Russia? Or, maybe it became common at some point after World War II? No, Colossus and his siblings, Mikhail and Illyana, are descendants of Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin, who befriended the final royal family of Russia.
The fact that Rasputin had living descendants who possessed superpowers played into his plans to gain even more power and influence. It turns out that Rasputin was an associate of Mr. Sinister, as the two had met during World War II. Sinister revealed the origins of Rasputin's mutant abilities to him and convinced him to impregnate as many women as possible, in order to share his DNA and potentially create even more powerful mutants.
Rasputin was assassinated in the same way that is described in the history books. The Marvel version of Rasputin survived long enough to perform a magic ritual that spread his essence among all of his unborn children. So long as these descendants lived, there was a method by which Rasputin could return to the world, as he would possess his last living survivor.
Sinister traveled across Russia and slew almost every surviving member of the Rasputin family. He did this because he wanted to use Rasputin's own DNA to try and restore his own failing powers.
The final two members of the Rasputin family were Colossus and his brother, Mikhail. In the end, Mikhail chose to exile himself to another dimension. This act foiled Mr. Sinister's plans, as he could not risk slaying Colossus without Rasputin being reborn in a dimension from which he couldn't escape. The X-Men started out as a secretive organization, to the point where many wondered if they even existed at all.
This was helped by the fact that they had Charles Xavier on their team, who could easily wipe the minds of those who might causes problems for the group. As time went on, the X-Men became more public about their goals, which was helped by their inclusion in crossover events. The X-Men stood alongside the other heroes of Earth and saved the planet on numerous occasions. The X-Men have become even more politically active in recent years, which is a change that has been spurred on by the writers of the series.
It turns out that Colossus might be the most famous member of the X-Men, though for reasons that he wasn't happy about. There is a planet in the Marvel universe called Breakworld, where the inhabitants are convinced that a mutant from Earth will be responsible for the destruction of their world.
They eventually come to the conclusion that this mutant is Colossus. This led to the Breakworld story arc, where Colossus and the rest of the X-Men had to deal with the problems on Breakworld.
The storyline ends with the planet still in one piece, but there is a chance that another writer might pick up the storyline again someday. One of the most prominent storylines in the X-Men comics of the '90s involved a fictional disease known as the Legacy Virus, which was intended to be a metaphor for the HIV epidemic.
This was an artificial disease that was created by Stryfe, who brought it from the future and released it in the modern era of the X-Men. The Legacy Virus was intended to only affect mutants, which meant that it was responsible for claiming the lives of many different heroes and villains from the X-Men comics.
Moria MacTaggert had worked out the details of the cure and Professor Xavier managed to extract the information from her mind before she passed away, which allowed Beast to finish her work. The problem with Beast's cure for the virus was that it needed to be injected into a mutant who could activate their powers.
This process would end the life of the mutant in question, though the cure would be released. Colossus had previously lost his sister to the Legacy Virus, so he went behind Beast's back and used the serum on his own body. This meant that he acted as the catalyst for the cure of the Legacy Virus, but it took his life in the process. Colossus came back a few years later when it was revealed that he was revived by aliens, but what else would you expect from a comic book. The Phoenix is one of the oldest and most powerful entities in the universe.
It was there at the birth of reality and it continues to exist as the protector of the universe. The Phoenix became corrupted when it chose a human to become the bearer of its power. Jean Grey was believed to have become the Phoenix, but it was actually a new form that the Phoenix took on itself. The Phoenix would go on to become the Dark Phoenix in what is considered to be one of the best X-Men storylines of all time.
The Phoenix has reappeared on several occasions in the years since the Dark Phoenix Saga. It would go on to take several different avatars at the same time when it was split apart by Iron Man during the Avengers vs. X-Men series. Who needs the Fantastic Four, when you can have the Phoenix Five.
This led to five different mutants becoming the avatars of the Phoenix. They became a new team, called the Phoenix Five. Colossus was one of the five mutants who took on the power of the Phoenix Force.
This meant that he briefly became one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe. Even holding a diminished part of the Phoenix's power, Colossus could travel the universe and create flames of such ferocity that only the mightiest of beings could hope to stand against it.
Colossus' armored form has the added benefit of allowing him to ignore most important and basic biological functions, such as eating and drinking water. This also extends to oxygen, as Colossus no longer needs to breathe when he is in his armored form, as his lungs have been replaced with metal. The fact that Colossus doesn't need to breathe when using his powers, means that he is one of the best members of the X-Men to send on missions that involve traveling to locations with harsh or unknown environments.
His durable form means that he can survive in most situations that would result in the demise of the other members of the team. Colossus's lack of lungs, also, makes him one of the best members of the team to use on underwater missions. His metallic form will sink to the bottom of the ocean and he can just walk wherever he needs to go. The movie version of Colossus that appeared in Deadpool does need to breathe, as he was almost choked out by Angel Dust during their battle.
This is another example of the movie version of Colossus possessing different abilities from his comic book counterpart.
X-Men: The Last Stand may have given the fans the impression that Juggernaut gains his powers of super strength and invulnerability from being a mutant. This was the case in the Ultimate X-Men continuity, but in the main series of X-Men comics, he gains his powers from magic. The Juggernaut is actually the avatar of a mysterious magical deity known as Cyttorak. The power of the Juggernaut comes from a magical crimson gem that he keeps in his possession.
Colossus once took on the role of the Juggernaut and gained possession of Cyttorak's gem. The gem gave Colossus tremendous powers, as he possessed both his mutant abilities and the might of being the Juggernaut. It seems that Cyttorak took a liking to Colossus, as he was the only bearer of the gem to try and fight its influence. Cain Marko was already a hate-filled man, which is why he took to the role of being the Juggernaut so easily. It was due to Colossus' reticence that Cyttorak gave him a powerful transformation, which made Colossus look more like Cyttorak.
This issue was the first new X-Men story to be published after a five-year hiatus and served as an introduction to several new team members, including Colossus. But before he was contacted by Xavier, Piotr or Peter, as the Americans call him lived a simple life on a farm in the Soviet Union with his parents and younger sister, Illanya, who would later become the mutant called Magik. Professor X saw Peter's potential and recruited him to help save the missing X-Men on Krakoa, after which Peter decided to stay in the US and become a permanent member of the team, where he eventually struck up a romance with Kitty Pryde, AKA Shadowcat.
In , the Marvel Universe became plagued by a disease known as the Legacy Virus, which was designed to infect those with the X-Gene. Beast was eventually able to create a cure, but it required a mutant to inject themselves with the serum, an action that would be fatal. Colossus stepped up and gave his life to ensure no one would suffer as his sister did.
When Peter gets a distress call from his cousin, a journalist named Larisa Mishchenko, he returns home to Russia in order to help her. Larisa tells him that she's discovered that their family is descended from Grigori Rasputin, a real-life Russian mystic who was apparently a powerful mutant in the Marvel Universe.
One by one, all their relatives are being murdered because when only one member of Rasputin's bloodline remains, Rasputin will be reborn within them. Sadly, Larisa is later killed by Mister Sinister, who is revealed to be orchestrating the entire plot on Rasputin's behalf, but Colossus and his brother, Mikhail , manage to foil the plan.
Mikhail is also a mutant, but his powers are very different from his brother's - he has the ability to control energy, allowing him to teleport, fire energy blasts, and even manipulate the energy within others. In the presence of Cyttorak, Colossus defied him to give him enough power to kill even the Crimson Demon himself and they would fight to the death, but he instead gave it to Marko, who became Juggernaut once again.
With more power than ever before, Marko defeated Abdol. Although Cain Marko had enough power to kill Cyttorak, he only wanted to kill the man who killed his brother, Cyclops. After announcing his intentions to the X-Men, they tried to stop him but were easily defeated. Colossus confronted him, and tried to remind him that he wanted to destroy the gem, but Cain didn't listen. The Juggernaut easily punched him miles away and attacked him again, but Colossus managed to trick him into destroying the ground he stood on, making him fall off a cliff and be buried alive by the ground he had destroyed.
Months after leaving the X-Men to live a peaceful life in Russia, Colossus was convinced by his sister Illyana to rejoin the team and help them with the mutant refugees in X-Haven in light of the M-Pox breakout.
Colossus and the Horsemen of Apocalypse. Storm sent Colossus and the young mutants he took under his wing Anole , Ernst , Glob , and No-Girl to investigate the sudden appearance of six hundred new mutant signatures in a warehouse in Tokyo. Sugar Man was about to leave with an ark containing six hundred mutant embryos, which he genetically engineered in total isolation from the Terrigen Mists , when they arrived. He planned to take it with him to the future , where they would be safe from the M-Pox and grow to become the next generation of mutants, with him as their leader.
Arriving on Omega World , they were attacked by the Horsemen of Apocalypse. Colossus stayed behind to hold the Horsemen off while his team escaped [78] and was consequently converted into the Horseman of War. After Beast discovered that there wasn't a cure for the M-Pox and no way to alter the Terrigen Cloud, the X-Men decided to go to war against the Inhumans to decide the fate of the Terrigen. With the war underway Colossus was stationed at X-Haven to protect it from a potential Inhuman counterattack.
When the Inhuman Royal Family arrived to do just that, Colossus was left to face them on his own. He later joined the rest of the X-Men in Iceland in the final battle against the Inhumans, where Medusa finally understood what the X-Men were fighting for so she voluntarily destroyed the Terrigen Cloud, ending the threat of the M-Pox. Storm asked Kitty Pryde to return to the X-Men and take her place as leader, and in doing so Kitty moved the mansion from Limbo to Central Park and created a new field team and recruited Colossus.
Piotr and Kitty shared many awkward moments given their history, and despite their initial attempt to move forward only as friends, [83] they reignited their romance and Kitty eventually proposed to Piotr, and the two became engaged. In the reality created by Nate Grey and a Life Seed , a world where everyone on Earth was a mutant and relationships were strongly discouraged or illegal, Piotr was a member of that reality's X-Men team.
He was seen offering his strength to help move automobiles and protect bystanders from falling debris while the team dealt with a young mutant's burgeoning powers. Petersburg who on the day of the Resolution developed the power of a black hole in his hand.
Like the rest of the X-Men, Piotr's memory was wiped overnight of his former teammate Bishop, who had committed an offense against the status quo by having a romance with Jean. X was seamlessly woven into the memories of the team, taking Bishop's position and his residence. The next morning Nate presented the team with a flyer distributed by Murshid En Sabah Nur , a revolutionary preaching the virtues of love. As part of the X-Men, Piotr lived alone, but in the same housing development as the rest of the team.
He spent his downtime painting, at present working on a "fantastical" portrait of a dragon i. Piotr and the rest of the X-Men were the primary response team to all matter of worldwide threats and danger. When a forest fire threatened to destroy Los Angeles and a mutant hatchery, Cerebro West, Colossus and Nature Girl were tasked with helping save as much of the wildlife as possible.
Their mission a success, the team wound down together watching news coverage of the rescue and spend the following day together pursuing leisurely activities. While lounging, Jean was knocked down by a strong broadcast from Murshid, naming a meeting place and time in Central Park to hear about his resistance to the individualism of society.
Piotr and the X-Men were later seen at Murshid's rally, listening to his call to "embrace the connections that make life worth living" and keeping a watchful eye on the gathered crowd. Tensions escalated after Murshid kissed his son Evan 's head; members of the crowd began to rip the claws off a Wolverine statue, with X and Colossus attempting to intervene.
Piotr found the whole affair to be blasphemous and easily lifted several mutants into the air when they attempted to use the broken claw as a battering ram to attack the X-Men. At this point Colossus and Shadowcat, a member of Murshid's X-Tracts , shared an initial knowing look.
Murshid and his X-Tracts left soon after, expressing love for the X-Men, and the crowd dispersed. Later at a team meeting, the X-Men were conflicted over how to respond to the revolutionaries; Jean understood the more radical and less pacifistic view, but thought they were blowing things out of proportion.
Colossus saw it as their duty as X-Men to use their powers to protect the world against threats and uphold their values, even if it meant sometimes resorting to violent means to do so. He called for a swift end to the revolutionaries before their movement could grow out of hand, much like a wildfire. In the end the group decided that they needed to keep an eye on the X-Tracts and loop in Department X. Colossus stormed out following the end of the meeting.
Back home painting sometime later, Colossus angrily flung his paintbrush against the wall, haunted by "obsolete" thoughts and feelings toward Kitty. After another successful relief mission in the Bahamas, the team watched a news report broadcast of a speech by the X-Tracts, which in part announced the group's upcoming presence in London on Xavier Day.
Colossus angrily smashed the TV upon hearing this news and chastised the group for their pacifistic approach thus far in dealing with the rebels. Magneto agreed with Colossus, highlighting the movement's gaining traction. Realizing that Department X was not enough to combat the revolutionaries, Jean called for the X-Men to make a stand for "evolutionary rights" and meet the rebels head on at the holiday gathering.
As promised, Murshid and his X-Tracts arrived to preach their message to the gathered crowd, inciting blatant acts of passion and eroticism. Enraged by this, Colossus attacked Kitty Pryde, who phased his punch through her. His action triggered flashes of their past relationship and prompted him to spontaneously kiss her.
The gathered X-Men and Department X squad proved unable to successfully combatant the riled crowd using traditional tactics. In a desperate move, Jean used her telepathy to violate the minds of the gathered crowd and ordered them to disperse. Assembling for a debrief soon after, the X-Men witnessed more gigantic fissure opening up across the world, resembling rifts created by reality-bending Omega mutants. That night, Colossus burned his X-Men costume and prepared to leave the group behind due to his feelings for Kitty.
Before he could leave, however, Department X members Moneta , Northstar , and Psylocke arrived to arrest him. They almost successfully subdued him after a brief skirmish, but he escaped. After being confronted by the X-Men, Nate revealed his involvement in the creation and maintenance of their reality and the physical and mental toll it was taking upon his body.
While revealing himself to the X-Men, members of the X-Tracts including Colossus and Danger Room prison attacked the gathered group, forcing the X-Men to protect Nate until matters could be sorted. After a brief skirmish, Nate revealed to Colossus and the others images of Cyclops and the other remaining mutants from the mainstream reality, using the images to highlight the pain and suffering caused by their relationships with one another and humanity.
Simultaneously Nate transformed the mutants back into their mainstream counterparts, with Piotr regaining his lost forearm. Jean insisted that their bonds with others were what made them who they were and that they needed to be able to make mistakes together. After some back and forth between the group over what they were returning to and the ramifications upon its inhabitants of dismantling the utopian reality, the X-Men eventually all decided to leave the manufactured reality and returned home.
Colossus was one of numerous mutants who moved to Krakoa after Charles Xavier and his allies used the island to establish a new mutant nation. He moved away from mainland Krakoa to grow Krakoan medicine in the Savage Land. Piotr's new peaceful life was interrupted by a call from Domino for help on a mission for the newly reformed X-Force. During the operation, Piotr watched Domino die, and ensured her resurrection at the hands of The Five , a group of Krakoan mutants who could unite their powers in a resurrection ritual.
During this time, he also began a relationship with a water-manipulating mutant named Kayla. Unbeknownst to Piotr, his brother Mikhail had returned, and began working for the Russian government. He coerced Chronicler , a Russian mutant with the power to bend reality and influence a person's actions, to turn Piotr into a mole, having him leak crucial Krakoan intelligence.
Colossus was accepted onto the Council, with a vote of Enhanced Mutant Physiology : Colossus is a mutant with the superhuman ability to convert the tissue of his entire body into an organic steel-like substance.
Once in his armored form he remains so until he consciously wills himself back to normal. A mystical deity, Cyttorak derived power from worship and the spread of his name. He removed his power from the previous Juggernaut, Cain Marko, because that avatar had been corrupted in the name of the Asgardian Serpent. Cyttorak was quite pleased with Colossus's performance as his avatar, and therefore fed him tremendous power even compared to Marko.
